After World War I, in 1918, Vienna became capital of the Republic of German-Austria, and then in 1919 of the First Republic of Austria. In 1913 Adolf Hitler, Leon Trotsky, Josip Broz Tito, Sigmund Freud and Joseph Stalin all lived within a few kilometers of each other in central Vienna, some of them becoming regulars at the same coffeehouses.
Until the beginning of the 20th century, Vienna was the largest German-speaking city in the world. Today, it is the second-largest German-speaking city after Berlin.
Vienna is often called “The City of Music” and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, as well as the famous Strauss-Dynasty all lived in Vienna and created some of their most famous compositions there. More famous composers have lived in Vienna than any other city in the world
Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, lived and worked in Vienna for many years. Thanks to Freud, Vienna is known as the birthplace of psychotherapy.
