More info: Prague was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the residence of several Holy Roman Emperors, most notably Charles IV. Prague was an important city to the Habsburg monarchy and Austro-Hungarian Empire. The city played major roles in the Bohemian and the Protestant Reformations, the Thirty Years' War and in 20th-century history as the capital of Czechoslovakia between the World Wars and the post-war Communist era.

Prague has numerous well known cultural attractions which include Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, the Old Town Square with the Prague astronomical clock, the Jewish Quarter, Petrin hill and Vysehrad. Since 1992, the historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

There are hundreds of concert halls, galleries, cinemas and music clubs in the city and many music festivals are held throughout the year. Within the city there are more than ten major museums as well as a wide range of public and private schools and Charles University is the oldest university in Central Europe.

Amongst Prague’s most popular tourist landmarks and with close to 2 million visitors per year, is Prague Castle which is the third largest castle in the world. The Petrin Lookout Tower resembles the Eiffel Tower and is a fantastic vantage point with panoramic views across Prague.

The Old-New Synagogue, often called Altneuschul, was one of Prague’s first Gothic buildings. It is not only the oldest active synagogue in Europe but also the oldest surviving medieval synagogue with a twin-nave design.

With the growth of low-cost airlines in Europe, Prague has become a weekend city destination allowing tourists to visit its museums and cultural sites as well as sample its Czech beers and cuisine. Almost one-half of the national income from tourism is spent in Prague.
