After the near-total destruction of Gdansk by the Russians at the end of the Second World War, detailed reconstruction was undertaken and is still going on to the present day.

The old town of Gdansk is a pedestrian zone with 17th and 18th-century merchants’ houses with gables reminiscent of Amsterdam, reconstructed meticulously from original plans and paintings.

On Long Market, is an enduring symbol for Gdansk which is Neptune’s Fountain, which was cast in bronze in the city in 1615. Located by the palatial townhouses where Poland’s royalty would have stayed, it shows Neptune bowing his head slightly as a sign of deference.

The enormous Gothic St. Mary’s Church, is the largest brick church in Europe and can hold over 25,000 people. A major reconstruction was needed after the Second World War, but all of its valuable fittings were saved.

An emblem for the city, the Gdansk Crane on Motlawa’s Long Embankment, dates back to the 14th century. This piece of machinery harks back to the time when Gdansk was in the Hanseatic League, and could load or unload four tons of cargo, lifting it to a height of 11 metres. The crane doubled as a waterside city gate and was in use up to the 1800s.

Visitors can enjoy a view of Gdansk from a 17th-century-style sailing vessel. The ship from the Galeony cruise company departs from just in front of the medieval wooden crane and travels past the shipyards and on to Westerplatte, where the first shots of the Second World War were fired.

At the northern end of Gdansk's waterfront is the Museum of the Second World War. It is the largest war museum in Europe and is located on a historical site, namely where the Second World War started on September 1st, 1939. The museum has all sorts of detailed interactive presentation styles to share the history, horrors and stories from World War II.
