More info: The popular Spanish resort of Benidorm is one of the main tourist destinations along the Costa Blanca and is famous for its vibrant nightlife. Benidorm is home to more than 200 nightclubs and 1,000 bars. There is also a huge range of English, Irish and Dutch pubs, as well as sports bars.
Pedro Zargoza was the mayor of Benidorm when it was just a sleepy fishing village. He believed that Benidorm had huge potential to become a popular destination for holidaymakers. He was responsible for Benidorm’s then totally unique layout. He realised that by building upwards, people could be near the beach and have their own balconies with sea views. This along with package tour holidays and the rise of British tour operators saw the huge transformation of Benidorm, in the latter part of the 1960s.
Whilst the wearing of bikinis was banned in Spain, Zargoza convinced General Franco to allow them in Benidorm, for the sake of increasing tourism, hence Benidorm was the first place in Spain where bikinis were allowed.
