More info: Sturgeon Bay remains home to a number of shipyards where colossal freighters in the winter months, seek refuge from the elements and routine maintenance. Each year, the annual winter layup takes place as Great Lakes freeze and the Soo Locks close for yearly maintenance.

The Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal connects Sturgeon Bay with Lake Michigan across the Door Peninsula. A dredged channel continues through Sturgeon Bay to Green Bay. This combined waterway allows ships to pass between Lake Michigan and Green Bay without traversing the dangerous Porte des Morts strait.
