More info: St. Petersburg is situated on the Neva River on the Baltic Sea. It was formerly known as Petrograd and then Leningrad and was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great.

St. Petersburg is a city of palaces and museums, broad avenues and winding canals. Its history has given the city a wealth of architectural and artistic treasures including world-famous attractions such as the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Mariinsky Theatre. Designed to accommodate 14,000 standing worshippers, Isaac Cathedral’s dome is plated with pure gold.

While the Winter Palace is undoubtedly the most famous, it is certainly not the only grand palace in St. Petersburg and due to a spate of projects in the reign of Catherine the Great, the city had more than any other in Europe and subsequent generations continued to create majestic residences in a variety of styles.

It is not only palaces and churches that make up St. Petersburg's treasure trove of architectural gems, many of the city's public buildings - from administrative buildings to army barracks, and up-market stores to universities and schools - are also architectural masterpieces spanning three centuries of styles and trends.
