More info:
Ashland in
Virginia, is affectionately referred to by locals as the “Center of the Universe”, due to its central location in the state.
It is situated approximately 15 miles north of Richmond and is less than two hours from Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, Charlottesville, and Norfolk.
The origin of Ashland dates back to the late 1840s when it was developed by the railroad as a mineral springs resort. Officially incorporated on February 19, 1858, the town was named “Ashland” after native son Henry Clay’s estate in Kentucky.
When the
Randolph Macon College was relocated to Ashland in 1868, the town evolved from a railroad resort to a small college town. The construction of U.S. Route 1, and later I-95, further influenced the town's character and development.
