The Yellowstone River flows 692 miles through Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota.
The webcam is located close to the town of Gardiner in Paradise Valley. The area has served as a main entrance to Yellowstone National Park since its creation in 1872.
More info: Yellowstone River leaves Yellowstone lake at Fishing Bridge, and continues north-northwest until it leaves the park near Gardiner. The Yellowstone River continues north and east through Montana and joins the Missouri River just across the North Dakota state line. Its watershed drains one-third of the state of Montana.
The river takes its name from the Minnetaree Indians, who called it Mi tse a-da-zi, or Yellow Rock River, most likely due to the yellowish formations of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
Recreational activities including fishing, hunting, rafting, wildlife watching and even agate-hunting are incredibly popular along the Yellowstone and are a vital part of the local economy.
