More info: The Balcon de Europa vantage point in Nerja, was originally the site of a fortress built in 1509 to provide coastal defences against attacks by Berber Pirates.

During the War of Independence, Napoleon's troops captured the village of Nerja and set up coastal defences in the castle which were subsequently destroyed by the English navy in 1812.

In the second half of the 20th century, the progressive development of tourism, which had begun in the 1960s, transformed Nerja into one of the Mediterranean coast's leading holiday resorts.
