The glacier has been retreating for 300 to 400 years, since the Little Ice Age. The glacier has retreated 1.75 miles (2.82 km) since 1929, when Mendenhall Lake was created, and over 2.5 miles (4.0 km) since 1500.
Mendenhall Lake has a unique ecosystem and is a nursery for a variety of fish including several type of salmon, Dolly Varden, char, and cutthroat trout.
The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center offers views of the glacier and lake as well as exhibits and high-quality recreation opportunities.
