More info: Lake Windermere is England's largest lake at 18 km long and 66 mtrs at its deepest. The lake is drained from its southernmost point by the River Leven and fed by numerous rivers including the Brathay, Rothay, Trout Beck, Cunsey Beck and several streams. The lake is largely surrounded by foothills of the Lake District which make it a popular place for walkers and hikers and tourism is the main source of income for Lake District economy.

Passenger services operate along the whole length of the lake, from Lakeside railway station, on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite heritage steam railway at the southern end of the lake, to Waterhead Bay near Ambleside in the north. Read Getting to and around the Lake District for a complete guide.

There are five large boating clubs based around the lake: the South Windermere Sailing Club, Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club, the Lake District Boat Club, the Royal Windermere Yacht Club, and the Windermere Cruising Association.

The Lake District National Park was designated a national park in 1951 and is the most visited and second-largest national park in the UK, after The Cairngorms in Scotland.
