More info: Lake Tahoe is a freshwater lake located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is the second deepest lake in the United States with an average depth of 305mtrs. The lake stretches a distance of 35kms with two thirds of the lake in California and one third in Nevada.
The Truckee River is the only outlet for Lake Tahoe. It flows northeast through Reno, Nevada, into Pyramid Lake which has no outlet. It accounts for one third of the water that leaves the lake, the rest evaporating from the lake's vast surface. The flow of the Truckee River and the height of the lake are controlled by the Lake Tahoe Dam at the outlet.
Lake Tahoe attracts visitors from around the world with activities in summer including hiking, windsurfing, golfing, fishing and swimming and in winter provides some of the best skiing in the world.
