Downtown Canmore is nestled between the glacier-fed waters of the Bow River, the great Rocky mountains and the walking trails along Policeman’s Creek.
Canmore was a mining town back in the 1880s and remained so throughout most of the 20th century until the last mine closed in 1988. It wasn’t until recent years that Canmore became a tourist destination.
Visible from anywhere in Canmore is the Three Sisters Mountain made up of Faith, Hope and Charity - the individual mountains at nearly 10,000 feet.
Hiking is one of the most popular things to do in Canmore and there are hundreds of solo and guided hiking trails from very easy to very difficult, taking anywhere from an hour to several days. Other outdoor activites on offer inlcude rock climbing, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding.
All around Canmore, including Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, the Kananaskis, and the Kootenays, presents the ideal place for a road trip offering stunning scenery and wildlife. One of the most famous road trips in the world is the Icefields Parkway, which goes from Lake Louise to Jasper.
