    The Tehachapi Loop is a 1.15 km long spiral, or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad Mojave Subdivision, through Tehachapi Pass in south-central California. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert.

More info: The Tehachapi Loop is one of the greatest engineering feats of its time. The loop allows trains to gain the elevation necessary to make it up a portion of the Tehachapi Mountains by making the incline more gradual.

The loop was constructed in the latter half of the 19th century as part of Southern Pacific's main line through southern California and was part of the final link of the first railroad line connecting San Francisco to Los Angeles.
