More info: Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, is owned by the City of New Orleans and is located 11 miles west of downtown New Orleans. It has two runways and two helipads and is just 4.5 feet (1.4 m) above sea level, making it the third lowest-lying international airport in the world, behind Schiphol in the netherlands and Atyrau International Airport in Kazakhstan.
The airport was originally built during World War II for use as an Army airbase and was named Moisant Field, it was officially renamed in July 2001 to honour New Orleans native and jazz legend Louis Armstrong on his 100th birthday.
