More info: Ilulissat Airport in Greenland, was built in 1984 and replaced the heliport. Air Greenland uses the airport as a domestic hub for northern Greenland. A major expansion of the airport, including a new, longer runway and a new terminal, is ongoing and is expected to be completed around October, 2026, which will allow larger jet aircraft to serve more international destinations.
The coastal town of Llulissat in western Greenland, is one of the key tourist destinations. It is known for the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord and for huge icebergs in Disko Bay, shed by the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. Trails run to the Sermermiut settlement for dramatic views over the ice. The Ilulissat Museum traces the area’s history and the life of local-born explorer Knud Rasmussen.
The area is home to thousands of Greenland dogs, used for dogsledding and between June and September, Ilulissat is a fantastic location for whale watching. Playful humpbacks are the most common, though Minke and Fin whales are also often seen.
