The Elbe River is one of the major waterways of central Europe. It rises in the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains near the border of the Czech Republic and Poland. The river then makes a wide arc across Bohemia and enters eastern Germany about 25 miles southeast of Dresden. Above Hamburg, the Elbe River splits into two branches which rejoin farther downstream where the river then broadens into its estuary, the mouth of which is at Cuxhaven, where it flows into the North Sea.
The Elbe has the fourth largest river basin in Central and Western Europe after the Danube, Vistula and Rhine basins. The total length of the river Elbe is 1,094 km (680 mi).
