More info: With the expected volcano eruption in Iceland, the nearby town of Grindavik had already been evacuated after hundreds of seismic events were detected in October and November.

Instead of an explosive eruption, the lava has spewed out from fissures in the ground. In places, huge walls of earth have been erected to guide the impending lava from structures such as the power station.

Iceland is one of the most volcanic regions on the planet, sitting on the mid-Atlantic ridge, where the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia are pulling apart by 2cm a year.

The eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in 2010 was the second-largest of the 20th century. It stranded tens of thousands of air travellers for days and sent a huge ash cloud into the sky.
