More info: Bran Castle is a national monument and landmark in Romania and outside of the country it is known as Dracula's Castle – though is one among several locations linked to the legend of Dracula.

Bram Stoker never visited Romania. He depicted the imaginary Dracula’s castle based upon a description of Bran Castle that was available to him in turn-of-the-century Britain. The imaginary depiction of Dracula’s Castle from the etching in the first edition of “Dracula” is strikingly similar to Bran Castle and no other in all of Romania.

Bran Castle is owned by the descendants of Queen Marie, to whom it was given 1920 as a token of appreciation for her efforts to unify Romania. After her death, Bran Castle was inherited by her daughter, Princess Ileana, who ran it as a hospital during World War II. In 1948 the castle was seized by the Communist regime, but it was returned to Dominic von Habsburg, Princess Ileana’s son, in 2006.

Today, Bran Castle is open as a museum and is one of Romania's top tourist attractions and entire industry has grown around describing it as ‘Dracula’s Castle’.
