More info: Newfoundland and Labrador is a province located on the northwest coast of Canada. Newfoundland is an island located in the Atlantic Ocean and Labrador is a peninsula that borders Quebec.

St. John's is the provincial capital and largest city in Newfoundland. The city is known as the one of the oldest in North America and is notable for the natural harbour which has provided shelter from the North Atlantic for more than 500 years.

The only passage from the Atlantic to St. John's Harbour, is via The Narrows which at its shallowest depth is 11 metres and its narrowest point, 61 metres. A skilled captain is required to navigate large ships through the Narrows, a practice known as “threading the eye of the needle”. At the entrance to The Narrows, is the Fort Amherst Lighthouse which is now a heritage site.

It is off this coast that the Titanic sank on the night of April 14th to 15th in 1912 and Cape Race was the first place to receive the news of the sinking of the British liner .
