The close proximity of Kos to the coasts of Turkey and more precisely to the ancient city of Halicarnassus, now known as Bodrum, allows it to offer an interesting combination of eastern and western elements.
The Old town of Kos is rich in evidence from the Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods, but also from the medieval period of the Knights, the Ottomans and the Italian occupation. There are several remarkable archaeological sites to visit as well as ancient ruins and castles.
Kos is the birthplace of Hippocrates, recognised as the father of medicine. The Medical School of Kos houses roughly 60 volumes of writings by Hippocrates.
