Zandvoort remains one of Amsterdam’s most popular beaches and is home to many different kinds of restaurants as well as beach sports, tourist and visitor attractions, including the well known international Formula 1 racetrack Circuit Zandvoort

Zandvoort was initially a fisherman’s village dating back to the year 1100. Due to the dusty sand the soil was difficult to work and not suitable for the cultivation of crops whereas the sea was rich in all kinds of fish, such as cod, haddock, plaice, dab and also herring. The inhabitants fished with an open fishing boat, called the slabbert or slapbuis in Dutch. This was a type of Dutch boat with Frisian origins, even older than Viking vessels.
