More info: The town of Redcar in Yorkshire, originated as a fishing hamlet in the 14th century and became a fashionable seaside resort in the early 19th century. Redcar prospered as a seaside town drawing tourists attracted by eight miles of sands stretching from South Gare to Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
In 1929, the New Pavilion theatre was built which is where comedian and entertainer Larry Grayson coined his catchphrase "Shut that Door!" since the stage door was open to the cold North Sea breeze.
In the post war era, one of the town's main employers was the nearby Teesside Steelworks at Warrenby, founded by Dorman Long in 1917. The steel produced at Dorman Long was used to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Tyne Bridge, Auckland Harbour Bridge and many others.
The 80 ft (24m) tall Redcar Beacon located on the promenade was built as a part of the regeneration of Redcar seafront. It has a café and bar, viewing terrace, outdoor seating and sky pods available for hire.
Kirkleatham Museum, is a local history museum covering industrial, maritime, and social history. The museum is housed in a historic Queen Anne building and features a wide range of exhibitions.
Redcar has several parks and open spaces, such as Zetland Park, which has a children's play area and tennis courts, and the nearby Locke Park. Redcar is on the England Coast Path, a major walking trail that runs along the coast.
