More info: The city of Gijon is located on the coast of the Cantabrian Sea in the Bay of Biscay, in the northern part of Asturias. It is approximately 24kms from the capital of Asturias which is Oviedo. The original settlement was on the peninsular of Cimavilla, a landmark which separates the beach of San Lorenzo and adjacent neighbourhoods to the east from the beaches of Poniente and Arbeyal, the shipyards, and the recreational port and the Port of El Musel to the west.
One of the cities green treasures is the Botanical Garden of Gijon, located in the countryside setting of Cabueñes.
The main beach at Gijon is San Lorenzo, which is the largest beach and is located within the city itself. It It is bordered by a very busy promenade known as El Muro, which is almost three kilometres long and goes from the church of San Pedro to Mayán de Tierra, passing the mouth of the Piles river. Next to San Lorenzo are the beaches of Poniente and El Arbeyal, El Rinconin, Peñarrubia, Serín, La Cagonera and La Ñora, on the border with Villaviciosa.
Beach volleyball and beach soccer are popular activities at the beaches as well as surfing, sea kayaking and windsurfing.
