More info: Atlantic City Boardwalk was opened on June 26, 1870. It stretches along six magical and glittering miles of Atlantic City beachfront and is the world's first and longest Boardwalk.

The boardwalk was originally designed to keep sand away from the hotels and resorts that were developing along the shore.

Alex Boardman and Jacob Keim advocated for a walkway that would cover the distance from the beach to town. The walkway was constructed of wood with the planks laid out in a herringbone design.

Today, apart from keeping away the sand, visitors can enjoy the shopping experience as well as having delicious fudge and saltwater taffy. Salt water taffy is still sold widely on the boardwalks in Atlantic City (including shops in existence since the 19th century)
